World Backup Day

Don't Forget to Backup Your Data
Hi All,

Just spotted this article on backing up your data from the venerable New York Times.  Good stuff on backing up your data - whether its on your computer, your social media feed, your pictures or your music.  Don't lose your important data/info! Click here for the NYTimes article I just mentioned.

Click here for a link from Microsoft to learn how to backup or transfer your data on a Windows based computer.  This next link discusses  'How to Back Up Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch' - link comes directly from the Apple support website.  PC World has a link as well that discusses 'The Simple Guide To Backing Up Your PC'

These next links discuss the advantages of backing up your data to the 'cloud'  But first, what exactly is the 'cloud'?  Click here (Mashable), her (Gizmodo) and here (PC Mag) for explanations of just what the 'cloud' is...

Backblaze has a site that discusses how to backup your computer.
Five Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloud Storage
Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloud Computing
More Advantages and Disadvantages of Storing Your Data on the Cloud

Enjoy the links and remember, if you need to find more information about the cloud or backing up your data, just do a Google search with some of the key words you are looking for (cloud computing, backing up your data, backup, remote backup...etc)

Stu

Leap Second!

Hi All,

No doubt you've probably heard of leap year.  If not, click here and you'll get up to speed for what you need to know about for this blog entry.  Leap year 1 article.  Leap year 2 article.

Well, now there is a thing called 'Leap Second'.  What the heck is leap second?  Indeed, it is an extra second that will be added on June 30th at 8pm..  Why?  'So that watches, computers, clocks and other time tracking devices can sync up with the Earth's slowing rotation...the 61 second minute threatens to make computer systems go haywire...'

For more information about tomorrows' leap second click on the next bunch of links: CNN, Google article titled 'Time, Technology and Leaping Seconds', Neil deGrasse Tyson's tweet on Leap Seconds,
ACMA/ITU article about Leap Second and Gizmodo's article about Leap Second.

Hopefully this is one second, that 'doesn't take a second'.

Regards,
Stu

Tech Websites Galore!

Hi All,

I've listed a whole bunch of tech friendly, tech related websites.  Why?  I'm preparing for a CHIP Chat class that I'm hosting on Monday, December 2nd and Thursday, December 12th at the library.  BTW, CHIP is an acronym which stands for Computer Help In Person....get it?  Computer Help In Person - CHIP is the first letter of each of the words...

Anyway, in preparing for this presentation I've put together a fairly comprehensive list of tech and tech related websites.

Click on any of the links and you'll go directly to that particular website.  Wow - there's a lot of tech information available on the web -as one would expect!

My faves...PCWorld, Cnet, ExtremeTech and Technorati!

Enjoy the techie links!

G is For...

Hi All,

We are getting there....some time ago I started a series of blog posts in the same vein as Sue Grafton's series Kinsey Millhone wherein she titled each book 'A is for Alibi', 'B is for Burglar', 'C is for Corpse'....Click here for the link to the Kinsey Millhone series.

I'm doing the same think but with websites and links that I think blog readers might find useful and/or interesting.

Today we are up to the letter 'G'. Forthwith some neat sites that start with the letter 'G'. Enjoy!!!

Google - organizing the world's information - great search tool to find 'stuff'.

Gmail - email via Google - quick, easy and fast

Google Docs - Google's version of the Microsoft Office suite of software

Gawker - open bulletin boards and forums where users write the comments

Games - free games on a wide, huge and big number of topics! Word games, action games, puzzles and much, much more.

Guardian - UK newspaper - different viewpoints on world issues and current events since it is from the UK

Getty Images - photos, pictures and more from a huge repository

Gizmodo - info on technology, games, websites, software, hardware and much more...great stuff if you are a technology lover!

Enjoy the sites!
