How to Recycle Your Technology

Hi All,

We all have tech - smartphones, iPads, iPhones, tablets, phones, ear buds, wall chargers, laptops, smartwatches, desktop computers, watches, hard drives, monitors, computer mice, DVD's, CD's, CD-ROM's, CD players, DVD players, batteries, headphones and more - somewhere in our closet or under our bed.  Its everywhere this stuff!

And what happens when a new phone or laptop or tablet arrives in the stores and folks buy it?  What do you do with the older devices and equipment? Indeed, that would make for a lot of extra landfill garbage!

So...how do you recycle your older tech in an environmentally safe manner?  Read on for websites and stores that have some type of recycling program(s)!

Periodic Table of the Elements, in Pictures and Words - NOT BORING

Hi All,

When you think of the Periodic Table of the Elements - if you think of it all that is... - you probably think of this chart.

Well think of that chart no more - unless of course you are in a high school chemistry class - in which case you darn well should think of this chart!!!!

Searching on the web earlier today, I found this Periodic Table of the Elements - only this time it is in Pictures and Words...which makes the whole darn chart much more approachable.  For example, check out Hydrogen (sun and stars) or Boron (sports equipment) or Sulfur (egg yolks)...and so on.

Basically the chart shows you what elements various natural objects and/or man-made object are made out of...talk about interesting. 

For example, did you know that airplanes are made out of aluminum? Or that toothpaste is made out flourine and that batteries are made out of lithium? Its true - check it out on the site!

Disaster Checklists

Hi All,

We get an AAA publication at the library called C&T (Car and Travel). Its a free publications that we put out for patrons to leaf through and/or read at their leisure. Its a fun, travel oriented magazine that has lots of interesting articles.

One of those interesting articles appeared in the September/October 2015 issue.  It was - sorry for the depressing topic - called 'Disaster Checklist'.  The article subtitle was 'Create an emergency preparedness kit for your home'.  Good stuff.  Interesting and useful - quite the double play.

Some of the highlights of this brief article included having the following on hand:

• one gallon of water per person, per day
• a two week supply of non-perishable food
• a battery powered radio and extra batteries
• a first aide kit with bandages, gauze and tape
• wrenches, pliers and other tools
• solar cell phone charger or power inverter
• garbage bags
• copies of insurance policies and bank records
• sleeping bags, blankets and changes of clothing
• personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, soap, wash cloths'
• disposable plates , cups and eating utensils
• 7 day supply of prescription medications
• extra cash in case ATM's are unavailable

Daylight Savings Time

Hi All,

You might realize this - or you might not...tomorrow morning at 2am is the 'official' start of Daylight Saving Time. Click here for a bit of history regarding Daylight Saving Time . I'll use 'DST' hereafter in this blog entry to save typing and time.

Click on this link from the LA Times to learn a bit about some health and survival tips regarding DST. Go figure.

Also, this link from National Geographic has a good article entitled, 'Daylight Saving Time 2012: Why and When Does It Begin?" The article gives a nice brief background on DST and its history.

And while you are moving your clocks ahead tonight, you might want to check the batteries in all of your smoke alarms at home. And remember, while we might lose an hour of sleep each night, we now get to enjoy an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day! No more coming home from work in the dark!!!
