Indeed.com (A Simple, Popular, Effective Job/Career Site)

Hi All,

I was listening to WCBS Radio earlier this morning and there was a discussion of Indeed.com on their Morning Business Report. I thought that this would be a great website to discuss on the blog!

Indeed.com is a job aggregator...what that means to you is that the site posts jobs on the site from various other job websites. Indeed.com is the world's #1 job site - it has over 150 million unique visitors every month from over 50 different countries!

Users can Post a Job, Find Resumes or, more likely, look for jobs.

Upon going to the site, users have two dialog boxes to work with.  The first one lets the user type in a job title, keywords, or a company name.  The second box lets the user enter the city, state or zip code of a prospective job location.  Simple - easy and very, very Google-like

In addition users can Post a Resume by clicking on this link.  (You'll have to create a free account with Indeed.com first before you post the resume though!)

Once a search term is put in the first box and a job search is completed, users are faced with a  results list.  This list can be further narrowed down by location, distance to travel, salary estimate, location, job type, and other ways to limit the search.

When a user clicks on a specific job description the following information (in many cases) is included: job responsibilities, location, organization name and job requirements.  In addition, on the search results page a link to reviews is included.  Click here for an example of that for a search for 'Accountants'.

In addition, when job postings are looked at, there is an option to 'Apply Now' for that position on the right side of the page. A very, very helpful feature for the site!

Also, when users look at job postings, the organization or company attributes are ranked by stars on the review page.  Examples of company attributes that are evaluated include:

* Job Work/Life Balance
* Compensation/Benefits
* Job Security/Advancement
* Management
* Job Culture

 There are also individual job seekers' reviews in the form of up to a paragraph length long narrative. In addition, the job title, whether or not the reviewer worked at the organization?, and the date the narrative was written are included in the Employer Reviews section.

Finally, once you complete a search, the next time you visit the site, a list of your recent searches appears at the bottom of the page.  There is also an option to clear the recent search history.

Enjoy the site - and good luck job hunting!

Regards,
Stu

Career Websites From Forbes.com

Hi All,

Just one fantastic, comprehensive, organized, descriptive job oriented link today.  The link is from Forbes.com and the entry is called 'Top 100 Websites For Your Career'.

This is the second year that Forbes has generated a list of career oriented websites.  Wow - what a great piece of writing and research.  The sites are for job seekers and all ages, stages of career and stripes.  For example, there are sites for interns, job seekers, business owners, established professionals, retirees and for folks who are looking to launch, improve, advance or change a career.

Note that the sites are alphabetically listed - not in order of quality... five of the sites are mentioned below - and I chose them at random.

Brazen Life

Hired My Way

Indeed.com

Modern-Day Nomads

Professional Direction

Finally, click on this link for a post that Forbes writer, Susan Adams has written that picks the ten best sites from the list of 100. Some of highlights from the top 10 list include PivotPlanet, Indeed, SimplyHired, Idealist, Glassdoor, Monster.comInternships.com, USAJobs, Wall Street Journal.

Enjoy the sites - hopefully they'll help you land the job of your dreams...

Finally, we have a career counselor at the library on Tuesday nights who can help folks with resumes, cover letters, interview techniques and much, much more.  Attendees must make an appointment with her ahead of time since appointments are almost always filled.  Call the library at 516-249-9090 and ask to speak to a reference librarian.

If you are looking for job assistance you'll be happy you called!  Good luck on your job search.

Regards,
Stu

Career Advice and Career Help

Hi All,

The new year is coming up soon. Could it be the year that you find your dream job? Perhaps, but it will take work on your part to make that dream happen. Read on for more information on how to take the first step in the job search.

Click here for some Career Advice from About.com - the title of the article is Career Choice or Career Change. Good advice and succinctly put and it is only a click away!

Not sure if you want to even make a career change? Click on this link from - yes, again - About.com on '6 Reasons To Make a Career Change'

Click on this link to help you decide which - if any - career planning and career advice books to buy. Basically this is a 'what to look for type article' when 'buying career type' books. Helpful article but remember the library has many, many career advice and career resource books.

Click here to link to the search, 'career books' in the Farmingdale Public Library card catalog. Note also that we have a large complement of career and job resource books at the library - they are current, helpful, and free. Plus you can take them out for 4 weeks with your library card.

Finally, did you know that the Farmingdale Public Library has a professional Career Counselor at the library on Wednesday nights from 5pm-9pm?

Our Career Counselor can help you with your resume cover letter, start or begin a job search, and help with interviewing techniques. Appointments with Mrs. Dillon can be made by calling the Reference Desk at 516-249-9090. Appointments last an hour and can be made in advance.

Finally, the following link shows material (books mostly) from the online card catalog. The search that I used was 'job resources'. These are all materials that can be found in Nassau County. Note that the Farmingdale Public Library might not own some of these items. If that is the case, you can call the Reference Desk and a Reference Librarian would be more than happy to interlibrary loan the book from another library.

You can reach the reference desk by calling 516-249-9090.

Good luck job hunting!
