When Is...?

Hi All,

Let's keep it simple today!  When-Is is a website that gives the user the dates of religious and civil holidays around the world

There are links for American, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Hindu and Buddhist holidays on the site.  This first link gives the user the date for when Thanksgiving falls in 2015 (Thursday, November 26th by the way).

Other American holidays of 2015 include:
Martin Luther King day
President's Day
Armed Forces Day
Memorial Day
Flag Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Election Day
Veteran's Day
Thanksgiving
Valentine's Day and more.

Simple and easy to use, When-Is should be on your 'short-list' for holiday websites!

Enjoy,
Stu

Holiday Stress Management Relief

Hi All,

Do the holidays have you running everywhere after work and preparing for holiday meals late at night? Are you wrapping gifts for family and friends at 1am or buying presents on Amazon.com during work hours?  Well, you are not alone.  Lots of people are doing it evidently - just check out this article from Yahoo! Finance (title of article is 'Is Holiday Shopping Online OK At Work/ Survey Shows Are 'Buying It').

Okay...so the holidays can be a stressful time...and this entry is going to try to help you over the hump and get you to have a less stressful time - at least until January 2nd...

From the Mayo Clinic comes this article titled, 'Stress, Depression and the Holidays'. WebMD's holiday stress tips include this link, 'Tips for Reducing Holiday Stress'. Not to be outdone, the Cleveland Clinic also has an entry titled 'Managing Holiday Stress'.  A site called MedicineNet.com (self styled as being a site that 'Brings Doctors' Knowledge to You') has an article called 'Holiday Depression, Anxiety, and Stress'.  This is an extended article of 6 pages and can be found by clicking on this link.

And, finally, click on this link for an article from Time Magazine Online from October 2012 - titled '6 Breathing Exercises to Relax in 10 Minutes or Less'.

So...definitely buy those gifts, wraps those presents and have fun during the holidays - and if you need a place to figure out how to de-stress...click on any of the above links...

Happiness and Holiday Cheer - Season's Greetings!

Hi All,

It's that time of year again! You know what I'm talking about, right?  It's holiday time - a time of year when seasons greetings meet you at every turn.  Where dreams come true and snow falls at just the right time to make the Christmas lights glow and cast shadows on beautiful snow drifts in your backyard.

It can also be a time of great happiness and entertainment!  And why am I waxing so nostalgic over this season of giving?  Well, click on this link from the New York Times for an article entitled, 'Denmark, Where Joy Is Always in Season'.  What an article - what a county! I want to visit!  Now you see why I'm writing this blog entry!

Click on this link - which goes to the Farmingdale library card catalog - which will send you to a link for travel books about Denmark in the Farmingdale PL.  Based on the New York Times article, I suspect quite a few readers will now want to visit Scandinavia.  With that thought in mind...

click on this link from Wikipedia about 'Scandinavia' - which commonly describes the three countries of 'Denmark, Sweden, and Norway'.

So just exactly why am I writing about Scandinavia?  Because of a survey called the 'Satisfaction with Life Index'.  Learn more about this by clicking on this link from Wikipedia.

Top 10 countries on the Satisfaction with Life Index are:
1. Denmark
2. Switzerland
3. Austria
4. Iceland
5. Bahamas
6. Finland
7. Sweden
8. Bhutan
9. Brunei
10. Canada

and for perspective...here is a very, very partial list of where other well-known countries stand on this list....
11. Ireland
23. United States
31. Saudi Arabia
35. Germany
41. United Kingdom
42. Dominican Republic
46. Spain
50. Italy
51. Mexico
58. Israel
62. France
63. Hong Kong

81. Brazil
82. China
83. Cuba
90. Japan
96. Iran
133. Turkey
142. Syria
151. Egypt
166. Pakistan
167. Russia
174. Ukraine
178. Burundi

Hi All,

It is that time of year again...we are between Thanksgiving and the Christmas/New Year's Holidays - and that means parties, holiday gift giving, shopping, invitations to mail out, wrapping, cards to send and much, much more...

How is a person supposed to make head or tail from all the anxiety that this season begets?  Easy, click on the following links and you'll be well on your way to holiday season bliss.

Click on this link that will relieve you of the stress any time you have guests coming over during the holiday season.    For another perspective on simplifying the holidays, you can click on this link so that you can be organized this holiday season - and celebrate the season to boot!

From Styleathome.com comes this article entitled, '99 Ways To Get Ready For the Holidays'.  Yes, this is a long article, and yes it is an actual list - from 1-99 - on how to prepare for the holidays.  Cool stuff!  Especially number 12, 46 (who would have thought!) and 85.

Well, if you are having guests over, you will probably have to vacuum, or at least get rid of some of the clutter.  Click here to learn just how to do that....one room at at time.

Finally, click on this link - from MyWell-Being.com - which will, like the other links above, help you get ready for the holidays

Enjoy the holidays - hopefully they'll be stress-free, relaxing and filled with classic family get-togethers.

What to Look For When Joining a Gym...

Hi All,

So the holidays are here and the parties are around the corner. First the holiday party for work, the festivities and Grandma's. Don't forget the New Years' Eve party, your significant other's work party and the Christmas Day feast....is it just me or are my pants starting to feel a bit snug?

Yes folks, we have all just entered the holiday zone. The place where belts are suddenly tight, trousers don't fit and well, generally your once comfortable daily clothing is not so comfortable anymore...what can be done to combat these events?

Well, welcome to the blog entry where we can help you find a good gym to join so you can feel better about yourself while at the same time you can lose some of the weight you (me, we, all of us, etc) put on during this festive holiday season.

So you want (or need to join a gym)? Click here to find out which few key questions to ask before actually signing on the dotted line and dropping a few hundred dollars. The link is from an old standby - About.com and is titled, 'Gym Joining a Gym - What You Need to Know Before Joining a Gym'. You can also click here to see an article from Wikihow on whether or not you should join a gym - and what you should think about before actually joining the gym.

Click here for a link from Buzzle entitled 'To Join or Not to Join: Are Gym Memberships Really Worth It'? Why is this interesting? Because if all you need to do is break a bit of a sweat and do some walking, then quite possibly a gym membership is not for you...besides, you might be able to buy weights and conduct your workout from home. Just a thought. But here is a link to a set of weights that can be purchased for your home use.

This link is from Wal-Mart. Please note that I am not giving Wal-Mart the 'Farmingdale Public Library' seal of approval. I just used the link to indicate that weights are available to consumers. Note that you can probably buy weight sets at Target, K-Mart, Dick's Sporting Goods or other stores.

Don't forget to use Froogle.com to see which site has the lowest price on the weight set that you are interested in...

Finally, you can click on this entry from Ezine Articles entitled, '10 Reasons To Join a Gym'.

So, now that you have all these resources...get to work and decide whether or not a gym is right for you.

FYI, I might do a follow up entry to this blog entry; the subject of which would be how to get the most from your gym workouts and whether or not a Personal Trainer is right for you.

Good luck exercising and finding the right gym!
