The Eclipse is Coming, The Eclipse is Coming!

Hi All,

The eclipse is coming, the eclipse is coming.  Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you probably know that there is a total solar eclipse coming on Monday, August 21st!

The last time there was a total solar eclipse was in 1991 - over 25 years ago.
NASA has a great eclipse site  for adults and for kids!  Click here for the site. 
And the site has links to Events and Activities and Resources all related to the eclipse.  Click the prior links to go to that subject. 

CNN Travel created a funnish site called the 'Slacker's Guide to the 2017 Solar Eclipse'.  For complete coverage of the eclipse users can visit the formal CNN Eclipse website.  Viewers can also watch live, in virtual reality, as the eclipse moves coast to coast on August 21st!

Things To Do In the Summer With Kids On Long Island

Hi All,

Its summertime and the livin' is good - as they say.  But wait...you've got kids and you need to keep them occupied - you don't want them on a tablet or a phone or a tv or a computer screen all day!  What's a person to do?

Great question and we've got some answers at least.

This first link is from Click on this link from Mommypoppins for an article titled Summer Fun Guide For Long Island Kids. There are some great ideas lurking in there!

The next link is  also from Mommypoppins - this link is titled 50 Free Things To Do With Long Island Kids This Summer.  Awesome resources and ideas. 

A website called TripSavvy got into 'let's keep kids busy during the summer racket' with a link on their site called 'Top 10 Children's Attractions on Long Island'. 

Mommypoppins seems to be a getting a lot of play on the blog today.  Here's another valuable article titled '25 Things We Can't Wait to Do With LI Kids This Summer' - note that the article is very, very recent - as in from June 2017.

Finally the Long Island Press wrote an article titled '43 Things To Do With Your Kids on Long Island' some time ago.  The article is well worth taking the time to peruse if you want to keep the little ones busy this summer!

So there you have it - a bunch of websites that'll help you keep the kids busy this summer.  Remember there are about 65 or so days left until school starts! :)

Astronomy Picture of the Day and NASA website

Hi All,

Just a quickie post today.  Click on this link for NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Picture of the Day. 

Here is a summary of NASA's picture of the day: "Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer." Now that's a quick and accurate summary of the website!

Note that there are links below the picture.  The webpage is very heavily hyperlinked.  For example, you can click on Subaru Telescope, locked in a cosmic dance, Hubble Legacy Archive,  loops and tails, interacting galaxies back up to quintet status and constellation Pegasus.  Clicking on these links will get you ever deeper into the various (and myriad) sub sites of the NASA website.  Very cool  stuff - fore example, I clicked on the 'interacting galaxies back up to quintet status link' and I got more links from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory!  On this page you can find Chandra Observatory images by date - which goes all the way back to 1999!

Those of you who like 'all things NASA would do well to visit the Multimedia link on the NASA homepage. It is very, very interactive and has links for the Public, for Educators/Teachers, and For Students.  The shear number of  videos, images, NASA TV Live, Interactive Features, Podcasts and 3D Resources on the Multimedia page is awesome!

So sit back and gear your tablet, laptop or desktop computer up for a long, long adventure when you visit the NASA website!
