Because You Can Never Have Too Many Dictionaries!

Hi All,

I've been waiting for just the right time to talk about OneLook Dictionary Search.  What is it you ask?

Simple, type in a word and you'll get links to all the dictionaries that OneLook links to for the definition of the world search for. 

See link below for a search for 'bluebird'.  Results are divided into categories - general, computing, medicine, miscellaneous and more depending on the word searched for. 

Examples of dictionaries included in the search are vast - including: Wikipedia. Merriam-Webster.com, Oxford Dictionaries, American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Vocabulary.com, Macmillan Dictionary, Webster's New World College Dictionary, Free Dictionary and Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913 edition).

Pretty cool.  Now you can - if that is you wont - trace the definition of a particular word over time.

And, too boot...the site has a reverse dictionary. Which means you can type in a word or a phrase and a the results will b related words.....the opposite of how a dictionary works!

Word of the Day From Merriam-Webster

Hi All,

Watch your words!  And mind your definitions!

All joking aside I just came across a very interesting and painlessly educational website from Merriam-Webster (the reputable source for dictionaries that you've probably used in the past)


This link takes you to the Word-of-the-Day (WOTD) part of the website. 

Readers can sign up for the WOTD by clicking on this link. When You sign up, you'll learn a new word every day because a new word will be delivered via email to your inbox!  How cool is that?

When you get a WOTD you will find a definition of the word at the top of the email.  In addition Merriam-Webster provides you with several examples of how the word is used in modern conversation or in current/relevant sentence. 

Finally, there is a section in the email titled 'Did you know?'  This gives the readers context of the WOTD and gives even more background and information for the word.

WOTD is a great way to increase your vocabulary in a non-stressful, educational and informal manner.  Its great stuff!

Homework Help Resources at the Library

Hi All,

Imagine this scenario:  You are trying to complete your social studies report and it is 10:30pm on a Sunday night.  The report is due Monday morning and you need to find some encyclopedia articles for your report.

Are you going to panic? Are you going to 'freak-out' or stress out or worry yourself sick?

Nope.  No way.

Why?

Because you know that you can use your library.

That's right - you can use the library's online resources - WHILE YOU ARE AT HOME.

All you need is your handy-dandy library card and just visit the library homepage.  Click on this link and then click on the Research link at the top of the page.

Specifically we have a wide-ranging, comprehensive, current resource called 'Credo Reference' which contains dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, quotations, atlases, and more for students.  The number and variety of titles in each of the categories listed above makes this online database a great start for students to turn to when writing papers or essays for school.

Geography, history, social studies,biography, literature, poetry and more are just some of the subject covered in this all-encompassing database. You'll also find pictures, video, journal articles and current events related to the topic you are researching.

Students will probably get better grades - and spend less time doing research - when Credo Reference is used to help with school assignments.

What does the word mean? Dictionary.com

Hi All,

I bet you've heard of and possibly have even used Dictionary.com.  If not, click on this link to view the page.  Not only does the website generate definitions of words that you enter, it has a a plethora of other features. And if you want to see Dictionary.com in action, click on the word 'plethora' in the prior sentence.  I've generated a link to the definition of the word at Dictionary.com

For example, there is a Hot Word, the Daily Crossword, Word Games, a Crossword Solver another cool interactive features that users can discover.

My favorite?  Word of the day and Word Games.  What's yours?

Hi All,

Just wanted to post a somewhat whimsical post today since it is a fairly sunny Friday morning in mid Spring. Even more important is that it is not raining! Woohoo!

Okay...sorry 'bout that folks. I intended on posting on Friday morning, but stuff happens and well, I wasn't able to get back to the post that day.
