te pooch!  And do you know what?  Blog entries that have children and pets (dogs and cats) tend to have more hits than blog entries on regular topics like gardening, weather, sports, entertainment, etc...

But that's not why I'm generating this post!  The pets are darn near adorable - click on this link to the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington to learn about the various adorable, lovable, adoptable pets that they have at their facility.  Go ahead, make a dog or cats day and adopt the little guy or gal!

Now, usually folks don't go out and just 'decide' to adopt a pet on a moments notice.  Click on this link from the ASPCA to learn about some of the questions you should ask before you adopt a pet. The page also has a link entitled, 'The Right Pet For You'.

Paypal - great way to pay for your purchases on the web...

Pandora - internet radio - for free...using their 'Music Genome Project' to help you listen to the music that you really, really want to listen to!!!

Pubmed - great site for medical related articles and topics - very technical so beware!!! But super useful.

Powerball - site for 'all things' Powerball - find winning numbers, winners stories, locations to play Powerball, rules and much, much more.

Spring is Here: Start Your Vegetable Garden.

Judging from the weather over the last few days or so, it seems like spring has sprung and it might just be time for you to start your vegetable garden!

Without further ado, a few (3) good links for you to start your vegetable garden.

From the BackyardGardener.com comes this link. Its a simply designed webpage, but the topic coverage is very broad: with a links to lots of articles, how to's, garden design, and a garden store.

The link to the article entitled 'Vegetable Gardening For Beginners' was very helpful. Here is the link to the page.

Another site with the same coverage (vegetable gardening) but which is a bit different can be found by clicking on this link. On this site users can ask questions and get answers from the site authors.

Want to see someone's blog who is completely focused on her vegetable garden? Click here for alink to Skippy's Vegetable Garden - complete with lots of photographs of the various projects that she is working on in the garden. Great photographs!

Since I'm on the topic of blogs and vegetable gardens, click on this link to Top 10 Vegetable Gardening Blogs - there's an amazing amount of material on the site! With titles like 'Veggie Gardening Tips' and 'Daughter of the Soil' hopefully you won't be disappointed.

Finally, here is a link to explain how to take some excellent vegetable garden photographs. Who wouldn't want to take some pictures of a garden that he/she cultivated and then print them out and put the photographs in a frame so you can look at them in the winter?

Best Of Long Island Press Winners - 2012!

Hi All,

It's official - the votes have been tallied, counted once, twice and probably even thrice. The winners are in - I repeat, the winners are in.

What am I talking about you ask? The 2012 edition of the Best of LI Press winners.

A total of 362 categories were polled (79 new ones!) and over 1.2 million total votes were cast. That - as the LI Press website proclaims - was about 50% more votes cast than in 2011.

The Long Island Press says that the survey was so big they had to put the BOLI (best of Long Island) in 3 separate issues.

Part I features winners in the following categories: Automotive, Education, Health-Wellness-Beauty, Home and Garden, Pets, Services and Shopping.

Part II features winners in the following categories: Food and Drink, Sports and Activities, Restaurants, Nightlife and Spirits, Art and Entertainment, and Clothing

Part III features winners in the following categories: Best of the Best Winners which spotlights the top 20 vote-getters in the whole contest and Best of LI Weddings.

And just to show you that the survey is remarkably thorough and comprehensive, I'm going to list the categories in the Education section. Categories were: arts schools, catholic schools, college president, college sports program, high school spirit, learning center business, Long Island College or University, nursery school, school principal, teacher, and trade school.

Now that is quite a comprehensive list!

So, just what can you find on the 1940 census? Users can find an individual in the census, locate images (which can be further saved, shared, downloaded, used as a keepsake or for a family tree).

There is a huge, huge amount of information in the data. For example, users will find information that reflects the Great Depression and the New Deal. Internal migration, employment status, occupation, participation in the New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), WPA or NYA is indicated. This is just a super-brief overview of this mass of data.
